ADHD traits are not limited to people with an ADHD diagnosis.

ADHD symptoms across a continuous population distribution

ADHD is often pictured as clearly separate from being neurotypical.

ADHD symptoms across a continuous population distributionSixty-four simulated people begin in two unequal labeled groups, then rearrange into one continuous stacked distribution. Moving right represents difficulties happening more often. Each figure represents one person, and taller stacks mean more people are near that point. A diagnosis threshold appears near the right end, then the figures beyond it are softly highlighted; the people themselves do not change.WITHOUT ADHDWITH ADHDLESS OFTENMORE OFTEN

What the evidence shows

ADHD traits such as inattention and hyperactivity–impulsivity vary continuously across the population. Research does not find a natural boundary separating people with and without ADHD (Marcus & Barry, 2011).

A diagnosis therefore does not depend on traits alone. Clinical guidance also requires persistent symptoms that interfere with functioning or development, occur in more than one setting, began before age 12, and are not better explained by another disorder (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2026).
